The Red Barn (another one of “my favorite things”)

There is just something so peaceful about a beautiful, red barn, sitting quietly among rolling hills.  I had a photo session a couple of weeks ago in Lancaster County.  It is always like a breath of fresh air going to Lancaster County so I really enjoyed this particular session.  And there in the distance sat this breathtaking barn, sitting so majestically in the rolling fields of green.  I have loved red barns for as long as I can remember.  I had two very good friends in grammar school who lived on farms, and I spent many a day visiting them and playing in and around the red barns that served as the focal point of those beautiful farms.  So I don’t know whether it is the feeling of days gone by, or the fact that I associate them with the equestrian world (which I also adore!).  Or maybe it is the way in which most red barns sit with such confidence and seem to tell their own story of life while adding a glowing splash of red to the scenery.  Whatever the reason, I just love them so!   So you know I just had to snap a picture of this magnificent and charming beauty once my session was over and share it with you.  It is another one of “my favorite things”!

My Kind of Mall (antique mall, that is)

For those of you who know me well, you know that I am not a big fan of the typical shopping mall.  I strongly dislike the feeling of being cooped up inside a big space with bright lights, stale air, and sounds and smells of every type.  But there is one type of mall that sets my spirits in a happy whirl.  THE ANTIQUE MALL!!!  I love a quaint, small antique shop nestled among the other shops that line a town street.  But what I love even more is a big, converted barn that hosts an array of smaller, individual spaces that are filled with the treasures of a variety of antique dealers.  I LOVE IT!  You never know what you will find and if one “space” doesn’t provide what you are looking for, then perhaps the next space will.  And it’s easy to quickly move along to the next room where a  bunch of other antiques are displayed and awaiting your arrival.  There is one local antique mall that I love to frequent.  I love it for prop-shopping, for the friendly people that work there, and for the 50’s music they play while I browse and shop.  It’s a wonderful place to be!  And it’s another one of “My Favorite Things”!

A Few of My Favorite Things

In an effort to start a new tradition on my blog, I thought it would be fun to do a project that I titled “A Few of My Favorite Things”.   So throughout the year I will be posting pictures of everyday things in my life that I love the most.  Things that inspire me or make me smile or just give me a warm feeling of joy.  So I am beginning with this image of the first of My Favorite Things, an image from this morning’s breakfast.  Now, I know you see  this picture of pancakes, and although “pancakes” could easily be featured by itself as one of my favorite things (more specifically the fabulously, deliciously, mouth-watering Pumpkin-Pecan Pancakes from Williams-Sonoma that have become a regular part of our weekend mornings), it is the “waking up on a cold and cozy winter weekend morning and making a yummy breakfast for my family” part that is without a doubt one of my favorite things.  And after all, who can have little children (and a pancake-loving husband) and not have pancakes for breakfast on the weekends?   So while my 4-year old sous-chef  helps crack the eggs and mix the batter, and the smell of sweet pancakes begins to fill our home, so begins our morning, filled with warmth, love and plain, old-fashioned, family togetherness.  It is this that makes the weekends so special for me and is such a wonderful way to begin a day.  And this is the first of My Favorite Things!
